What You Get When You Call Us

Most cases are won or lost in the preparation of the case and the review of discovery.

We won at the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.

In Commonwealth v. Herman, 161 A.3d 194 (Pa. 2017), a York County case, the Court ruled part of the synthetic cannabinoid statute unconstitutional and affirmed dismissal of those charges.

Results Matter

We took the death penalty off the table. In a 2005 Clarion County capital case, we had the death penalty removed before trial. The jury found our client not guilty of first-degree murder; he was convicted of third-degree murder and sentenced to 18 to 36 years.

Questions people ask us most

These are the questions people ask us at 2 a.m. after an arrest. Honest, general answers are below — your specific answer depends on your charges, your record, and your county, which is what the free consultation is for.

It depends on the charge, how it's graded, your prior record and the evidence. Serious felonies in Pennsylvania carry long maximum sentences, and sentencing guidelines (and, for some offenses, mandatory minimums) can put prison time in play, so the early decisions matter. Charges can be reduced or dismissed when the stop, the search or the evidence doesn't hold up. No lawyer can promise a result. In your consultation we'll tell you what you're realistically facing and how we'd fight it.

Bail is set at a preliminary arraignment, and a preliminary hearing follows, often within days or weeks . That hearing is your first chance to challenge the evidence and cross-examine witnesses — the Commonwealth only has to show a prima facie case, so what happens there shapes everything after. Call us before that date.

Pennsylvania grades both by degree, and the grading drives the maximum sentence and the long-term consequences for jobs, licenses, and firearms rights. The grading on the criminal complaint is the prosecutor's starting position, not the final word — charges can be fought down a grade, or out entirely, based on the evidence. A free consultation will tell you what your grading actually means.

A conviction can follow you into job applications, professional licensing, and housing — which is why how the case resolves matters as much as the sentence. Charges that are dismissed, withdrawn or end in an acquittal can often be cleared from your record, while most convictions cannot. We think about your record from day one. Call and we'll walk you through it.

Sometimes. Cases turn on whether the stop and the search were legal, whether the witnesses hold up, and whether the Commonwealth's evidence actually proves every element of the charge. We examine that evidence piece by piece and challenge what doesn't hold up. No lawyer can promise a dismissal; we can promise the case gets examined.

Not without a lawyer. You have the right to remain silent and the right to counsel, and anything you say — even before charges are filed — can be used against you. A lawyer can speak to investigators for you and sometimes resolve a matter before charges are filed. Call us first; the consultation is free.

With a serious charge, yes. Bail, the preliminary hearing and early conversations with prosecutors shape the rest of the case, and decisions made in the first days are hard to undo. A free consultation costs nothing and tells you what you're facing.

We charge flat fees, so you'll know the cost up front. Financing and payment plans are available on a case-by-case basis. Your consultation is free and confidential.

Public defenders are often capable lawyers carrying very heavy caseloads. A private firm can give your case more time: a primary lawyer backed by a full defense team, a former District Attorney's perspective, and the resources to bring in experts. In your consultation we'll explain what we would do in your case.
